                 for the General Aviation Pilot


          This Guide will give the reader an idea of where to go
     for restaurants and entertainment on short dinner flights,
     day trips, and overnights in the mid-Atlantic states. No
     guarantees are implied as to the accuracy of the
     information. The latest update of the information is
     indicated by a date in brackets after the entry. The
     document will be updated as necessary in order to provide
     the best possible information. Telephone numbers are
     provided when known and any first hand or reliable source
     information is included. Any input to update or augment this

                            Delaware
Middletown-Summit Airpark (N92):  Howard's Family Restaurant.
     Nearby with courtesy car service. Ask at FBO desk for
     transportation. Jean's Luncheonette. Also nearby and FBO can
     arrange courtesy car transportation.
Wilmington-New Castle Co. (ILG):  Landing fee. Dutch Pantry
     Restaurant. Adjacent to the airport near the Control tower.

                            Maryland
Annapolis-Lee Airport (ANP):  Hayman's Crab House.  A popular
     seafood restaurant about one block south on Route 2.  Adam's
     Rib House. A little more than 1/2 mile down Mayo Rd. [4/94]
Cambridge (CGE):  Runway Restaurant. Small cafe located on the
     airport open for breakfast and lunch. [phone]. [9/95]
College Park (CGS):  94th Aero Squadron Restaurant. On airport.
     One of a large chain of aviation oriented restaurants.
     Always good. [phone]. [9/95]
Crisfield (W41):  Waterman's Inn.  Seafood restaurant near the
     city docks. approximately $3.00 cab ride or sometimes the
     airport manager may have a loner car. [4/94]
Cumberland-Greater Cumberland Regional (CBE):  Hagenbuch's
     Restaurant.  About 1 mile from the airport. The FBO can
     sometimes offer a courtesy ride. [4/94]. The terminal for
     the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is 3 miles from the
     airport. The 32 mile, 3 hour round trip from Cumberland to
     Frostburg passes through some of the most scenic countryside
     in the region including Cumberland Narrows, Helmstetter's
     Horseshoe Curve a tunnel, and mountain scenery along a 1300
     ft. ascent. Operates all months except January, February,

Easton (ESN):  Easton Airport Restaurant. Sandwiches, burgers and
     lighter fare. Excellent food. Walking distance. Telephone

Frederick (FDK):  Airway Cafe. Open for breakfast and lunch on
     weekdays and most of the day on Saturday and Sunday. Typical

Hagerstown (HGR):  Nick's Airport Inn. Recommended by many pilots
     in the area. On airport. [phone]. [10/95]
Ocean City (N80):  Several restaurants nearby and the boardwalk
     in this resort area can make for a pleasant day trip or
     overnight. Transportation to boardwalk is about $2.00.

Salisbury-Wicomico Co. Regional (SBY):  Runway Cafe. In the
     terminal building, generally closed evenings. (410) 860-
     1349. Murphy's Dockside. About 5 miles from the airport. Bay
     Land Aviation offers a courtesy car for local use.[4/94]
Stevensville-Bay Bridge (W29):  Hemmingway's. Easy walking
     distance. There is a worn path through the high grass behind
     the tetrahedron on the north side of the runway that will
     lead you to the marina maintenance and storage area. Follow
     the gravel road to the water and then the walkway along the
     water to the last building on the path. Casual dining on the
     banks of the Chesapeake Bay with an unobstructed view of the
     sunset near the base of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Kent
     Island. Seating inside or on the deck outside. Prices are
     moderate ($25-$35 per person for dinner) and the food is
     excellent. Their specialty is crab. (410) 643-CRAB.
     Reservations are suggested [9/95]. Kent Manor Inn. A little
     more formal than Hemmingway's. The restaurant will provide
     transportation for the 1/2 mile ride to the Inn. A courtesy
     phone is located on the side of the FBO in the breezeway
     next to the pay phone. Reported as having a great Sunday

Stevensville-Kentmorr (3W3):  Turf runway, no night operations.
     Kent Manor Inn.  See Stevensville-Bay Bridge. Kentmorr
     Marina Restaurant. Park on the north side of the runway at
     the bay end, opposite the homes/hangars, and walk a block to
     the marina. Great crab cakes. Listed in Private Pilot
     Magazine article "Where to Eat" in 1993. [4/94]
Westminster-Carroll Co. Regional-Poage (W54):  Bullock's Airport
     Inn. Walking distance from airport. Lunch and dinner served
     7 days per week. [phone]. [10/95]



                           New Jersey
Atlantic City-Bader Field (AIY):  Atlantic City boardwalk only 1
     mile away. Taxis available. Nothing much available at the
     airport itself but it is the closest airport to the casinos.

Hammonton Municipal (N81):  Cathy's Cafe. Good small restaurant
     at the south end of the field. Nothing fancy, but good food.
     Opens around 9am. [4/94]
Millville Municipal (MIV):  Flightline Restaurant. Very popular
     local spot, especially on Saturday mornings. The restaurant
     has approximately 15 to 20 tables seating 2 to 4 people.

Pittstown-Sky Manor (N40):  Sky Manor Restaurant. Good food and
     plenty of it priced right. Closed on Tuesdays and
     Wednesdays. [phone]. [9/95]
Wildwood-Cape May County (WWD):  Parking fee of $6.00. Flight
     Deck Restaurant. Reported to have good food but no details
     available. [phone]. Cape May with its Victorian
     homes, boardwalk, seaside atmosphere, and location on the
     Atlantic Flyway bird migration route make this a good
     candidate for day trips or weekenders. The tourist
     population soars in the summer and begins to slow down in
     October. A shuttle is available to and from town. There are
     many bed & breakfasts in the area and reservations can be
     made through the Cape May Reservation Service at 1-(800) 729-

                          Pennsylvania
Allentown (ABE):  Glass Terrace Restaurant. In the terminal
     building. [phone].  Sheraton Jetport Inn. Reported to
     have an excellent Sunday breakfast (8-10am) and lunch (11am-
     2pm). The FBO can help arrange transportation to the

Altoona-Blair Co. (AOO):  Flight Line Restaurant. In terminal
     building. Reported to feature home style cooking. [10/95]
Centre Hall-Penn's Cave (N74):  Penn's Cave. Less than 1 mile
     from this privately owned, public use airport located about
     50 miles SE of State College, is touted to be the world's
     longest underground river. There is a great nature walk to
     the cave or a courtesy car is available. Entry fee to the
     Cave is $7.00. There are adjacent camping facilities
     available for fly-ins. Attended during daylight hours and

Easton (N43):  Fork's Valley Inn and Restaurant. Only 1/4 mile

Gettysburg-Doersom (W05):  $5.00 landing fee and $5.00 parking
     fee with or without fuel. Herr's Tavern Bed & Breakfast.
     About 1/4 mile east of the field toward Gettysburg on Route
     30.
Harrisburg (CXY):  Airport One Family Restaurant. Easy walking
     distance from Capital City airport (less than 1/2 mile).
     Good food, varied menu, homestyle cooking. Diner type
     atmosphere similar to small version of Shoney's or Denny's.

Harrisburg (MDT):  Alfred's Victorian Restaurant. 5 minutes from
     the airport by taxi. Open 7 days for lunch and dinner. (717)

Honesdale-Cherry Ridge (N30):  Cherry Ridge Restaurant. On west
     side of field near wind sock. Overlooks the runway and
     reported to have excellent food and service. [4/94]
Johnstown-Cambria Co. (JST):  Skyway Lounge. Restaurant located
     in the terminal and reported to serve good food. (814) 539-

Kutztown (N31):  Kutztown Diner. Family owned restaurant located
     at the edge of this small town airport. Reported to serve
     good food at good prices. Popular with local area pilots,
     especially for Sunday breakfast. Park your plane in the

Lancaster (LNS):  Restaurant in terminal building serves a good
     breakfast. [phone]. [4/94]
Latrobe-Westmoreland Co.  (LBE):  Blue Angels Restaurant. Located
     on the top level of the terminal building. Good food with
     panoramic view of the airport. Highly recommended by several
     pilots for the Sunday brunch. Good candidate for fall
     foliage trip. [phone]. [10/95]
Mount Joy- Marietta; Donegal Springs Airpark (N71):  Jackie's
     Restaurant. On field. No info. Railroad House Bed &
     Breakfast. 3 miles from airport. FBO will call for courtesy
     pickup. [4/94]
Pottstown-Limerick (PTW):  Airport Hotel and Restaurant. Located
     about a block from the airport. Go out to the main road and
     turn right. [phone]. [4/94]
Reading Regional-Spaatz Field: (RDG):  Wild Wings Cafe. Located
     in the terminal building on the south side of the field next
     to the tower. There is transient parking available between
     the west end of the terminal and the hangar. This is a
     popular restaurant for locals and pilots alike. They accept
     dinner reservations which are recommended for the dinner
     hour. The menu is varied ranging from breakfast items
     (separate menu) to snack foods, sandwiches, burgers, dinner
     entrees, delicious desserts, and of course the house
     specialty...wings. Fourteen different varieties of wings are
     available and M-F from 4:00pm to 11:00pm they offer all-you-
     can-eat wings. The restaurant is open M-F 6:00am til
     midnight, Saturday 8:00am til midnight, and Sunday 8:00am to
     10:00pm. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is casual.
     Seating for lunch and weekend breakfast is not a problem.

     on the north side of the field. Transient parking available
     at CAP Aviation, an FBO next to the museum. Telephone for
     museum - [phone]. [5/95]  Outlet Stores.  Reading is
     known as  "The Outlet Capital of the World". In the city and
     within 15 miles of Reading there are over 300 Outlet Stores
     for all manner of merchandise accessible by taxi or rental
     car from the airport. The city is speckled with good
     restaurants for the day tripper and many hotels and Bed &
     Breakfasts for the power shopper. More information is

 Smoketown (37PA):  Located on the eastern outskirts of Lancaster
     County, next to the old PRR tracks. Smoketown is a neat,
     well kept airport owned and operated by an Amish Family. No
     food is available on the field but only a short walk away to
     the right on the main road is T. Burke's Deli. Great
     sandwiches and light fare available except closed on Sunday.
     [phone]. Gavin's Home On The Range. Take a left on
     the main road and a short walk to another restaurant. Full
     menu available but specialty is buffalo steaks and burgers
     with homemade pies for dessert. Open weekdays and Saturdays.

Toughkenamon-New Garden Airport (N57):  Located 25 nautical miles
     west of Philadelphia. On the airport there is the Colonial
     Flying Corps Museum and many vintage planes on the ramp.
     Nearby are the fabulous Longwood Gardens. The 300 acres of
     landscaped gardens and 700 acres of meadows and woodlands
     were originally given to George Pierce in 1701 by William
     Penn. Pierre S. du Pont purchased the estate in 1906 and
     made many improvements to the land and dwellings. The estate
     was bequeathed to the public upon du Pont's death in 1954.
     The Gardens are among the finest in the world. There is a
     nominal entry fee to the estate. Expect to spend a full day
     or more roaming the magnificent estate grounds.
Williamsport-Lycoming Co. (IPT):  Skyview Restaurant and Lounge.
     Located in the terminal building with a nice view of the
     Susquehanna River and mountains. Good place to spend a fall

     Museum. About 5 miles from the airport. Transportation info

                          Rhode Island
Block Island State (BID):  Quaint New England fishing village.
     Cars restricted to residents only. Easy local transportation
     to town center. Restaurants, accommodations. [9/95]

                            Virginia
Charlottesville (CHO):  The Airport Alley Snack Bar in the main
     terminal. Deli with seating for sit down lunch. Open 6am-6pm
     M-F, 6am-2pm Sat, and 9am-5pm Sun. The FBO is located at the
     south end of the field where you can park your plane and get
     a ride to the terminal in their van. After lunch, the
     restaurant staff will call the FBO and they will pick you up
     for the trip back to the plane. Prices are very reasonable,
     $4.00-$6.00 for a typical lunch. The breakfast menu is

     Charlottesville offers many fine dining establishments for
     dinner that are accessible by taxi from the airport. In
     order of distance from the airport a few are as follows. The
     Silver Thatch Inn. On Hollymead Dr. (State highway 1520)
     near Hollymead just off Rt. 29N about a mile or so south of
     the airport. An 18th century Inn featuring Modern American
     cuisine served in romantic candlelit dining rooms. Lodging
     is available. Open Tues.-Sat. 5:30pm-9pm. [phone].
     [11/95].  Aberdeen Barn. Just outside the by-pass off Rt.
     29N on Holiday Dr. serving  prime rib, steaks, and selected
     seafood. [phone]. [11/95].  Oregano Joe's. Just
     inside the Rt. 250 by-pass on Emmet St. (Rt. 29)
     specializing in traditional Italian cuisine. Open for lunch
     M-F and dinner 7 days. [phone]. [11/95].  The Old
     Mill Room . Located in the Boar's Head Inn on Rt. 250W.
     Regional cuisine served in the surroundings of a restored
     grist mill. Four diamond rating by AAA serving breakfast,
     lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch. Reservations
     recommended. [phone]. [11/95].  Vivance. Authentic
     Italian dining in classic New York 40's style atmosphere
     located just inside the by-pass on Ivy Rd. (Bus. 250) on the
     west side of town. [phone]. [11/95].  Northern
     Exposure. New York bar & grill known for generous portions
     for the price located on West Main St. [phone].
     [11/95].   Berlin & Company. Located on Rt. 250 East in the
     Pantops Shopping Center serving steaks, burgers, and entrees
     as well as specializing in no-fat/low-fat and vegetarian
     selections. Open for lunch, dinner, and late night snacks.

          The following restaurants are located in the historic
     Downtown district. 235 (in The Omni). A Virginia wine
     country restaurant serving regional cuisine. There is live
     music on weekends and 235 offers a Sunday Brunch. A courtesy
     pick up is available from the airport (there is a speed-dial
     phone in the FBO and the main terminal where you can call
     the Omni directly, as well as most local hotels). (804) 971-

     grain warehouse. The menu includes steaks, pastas, and fresh
     seafood (including live Maine lobster and raw bar). Open M-F
     11:30am-2:30pm for lunch and 7 days after 6:00pm for dinner
     with Sunday brunch served 10:30am-2pm. [phone].
     [11/95].  The Hardware Store Restaurant. Dine back in time
     amid rolling ladders. A local favorite with a varied menu.

     French cuisine with formal dining room upstairs and casual

          Charlottesville offers many sites and points of
     interest making it a prime candidate for overnight or even
     weekend trips. Homes of the early Presidents of the U.S.
     such as  Monticello (Jefferson) and Ash Lawn (Monroe), the
     University of Virginia, Michie Tavern, and many fabulous
     wineries make the Charlottesville area worth the trip.

          Yellow cab taxi service available on speed dial and
     Avis, Hertz, Budget, and National rental car companies all
     provide service at the airport.
Clarkesville-Marks Municipal (W63):  Frank's Restaurant. 1/4 mile
     from airport. [phone]. [9/95]
Culpepper (W49):  Susie's Place.  Recommended restaurant about 4
     miles from airport. Courtesy car, rental cars, and taxis all
     available at the FBO. Several Civil War battlefields are
     located in the vicinity making this a good day trip. [4/94]
Danville Regional (DAN):  City view Restaurant. 1 mile from
     airport. [phone]. [9/95]
Forest-New London (W90):  New London Steak House. 1/2 mile from
     airport. [phone]. [9/95]
Leesburg (JYO):  Numerous restaurants within 3 miles of the
     airport, none within walking distance. Colonial Leesburg
     town center lists many good restaurants for all tastes,
     primarily colonial atmosphere. The modern, more contemporary
     end of town has the more common fast food type restaurants
     and national chains as well as some local spots where you
     can get a good meal at a reasonable price. Visitor Center

Luray Caverns (W45):  Luray Caverns. The main attraction in the
     immediate area are the world famous Caverns. The airport is
     owned and operated by the Caverns and the airport manager on
     duty will drive you to the Caverns and pick you up
     afterwards. There are no other services at the airport but a
     small restaurant is located at the Caverns. The best time to
     visit the Caverns is during September and October after the
     summer crowds have waned. [10/95]
Lynchburg (LYH):  Numerous restaurants within 3 miles.  Courtesy
     car available at Virginia Aviation FBO.  Fuel expensive.

Manassas (HEF):  Two Bucks' Chat `n Chew.  On the airport inside
     Falconhead FBO.  Ask the tower for "East ramp parking" on
     initial call-up.  Reasonable burgers and short-order food.
     Nice view of the airport.  Falconhead has sleep rooms in
     case you need an after lunch nap.   Fuel reasonably priced
     (supervised fueling -- they have had minor fueling accidents
     in the distant past).  Restaurant closed Sunday.  [12/95]
Melfa-Accomac County (MFV):   Overnight tie-down is $5.00. From
     MFV you can explore the Virginia eastern shore. Chandlers
     Auto Rental Service in  Melfa can supply a rental car to the
     airport. Open Monday through Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday 8am-
     1pm. [phone]/8499 for arrangements. A car is not
     needed if you intend to stay in a waterfront town. The town
     of Wachapreague is one such town. The Indian name means
     "Little city by the Sea" and is a quiet little town on the
     eastern side of the Delmarva Peninsula about 5 or 6 miles
     east of Melfa. The town is known as the Flounder Fishing
     Capital of the World and consists of about 300 permanent
     residents and 200 seasonal residents. Fishing charters and
     excursions are available from the marina. Barrier Island
     Cruises offers tours of the back bays and tidal waters of
     the area between the mainland and the barrier islands off
     the Virginia eastern shore aboard a 32 ft. pontoon boat for
     $15.00 per person. Special bird watching trips are

          The Burton House. A Bed & Breakfast owned and operated
     by area natives, Tom and Pat Hart. The house was built in
     1883 and restored by the Hart's in 1986. The house overlooks
     the Wachapreague channel, salt marshes and the barrier
     islands beyond. Six rooms are for rent in the house, one
     with private bath. Rates run about $75.00 per night. Open
     year round and they accept credit cards. The Hart's will
     provide transportation from the airport by prior
     arrangement. Tom and Pat are excellent hosts and are a
     center of community gatherings, being residents for five
     generations. They can advise guests of local activities and
     help to arrange whatever diversion you wish to explore.
     [phone].  Hart's Harbor House. A second B&B owned and
     operated by the Hart's next door to The Burton House. The
     house is another 100 year old farm house that the Hart's
     renovated in 1992. Three rooms are available, each with a
     private bath. There are three small cottages available on
     the property for rent also. The house has two porches for
     relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere of this sleepy little
     town. Tom cooks a big country breakfast for guests of both
     houses which is served at the Burton House. Room rates are
     $75.00 per night. [phone].  Wachapreague Motel and
     Marina. A small motel located in the middle of town across
     the street from the marina with 32 units available at about
     $40.00 per night. The same family owns the motel, marina,
     and restaurant as well as running the pontoon boat
     excursions and offering small boat rentals and charter

          The Island House Restaurant. The only restaurant in
     town since the fire of  1992. Excellent seafood specialties
     at reasonable prices. Much of the seafood is caught that
     day. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As with most
     establishments on the eastern shore, expect reduced
     operating hours from mid-October through mid-May, depending

Orange County (W93):  Pizza Shanty.  Across the road from the
     airport.  Not much for looks, but the food is great and
     inexpensive; also a convenience store.  Good burgers, BBQ,
     and Pizza.  The pilots normally hang out in the "store" part
     in the front.  You can watch airplanes, skydivers, etc.
     while you eat.  Open late except Sundays (closes at 4:00 PM)

Richmond-Ashland, Hanover Co. Mun. (OFP):  B.W. Hanover House &
     Country Kitchen. 3 miles from airport. Courtesy pick-up with

Richmond-Chesterfield (W96):  King's Korner Bar-B-Que Restaurant.
     In terminal building. Open 11am-2pm Sunday through Thursday,
     11am-2pm/5pm-9pm Fridays, and 11am-9pm Saturday. (804) 743-

Roanoke-Woodrum (ROA):  La Maison du Gourmet. Adjacent to field.

Saluda-Hummel (W75):  Pilot House Inn & Restaurant. Adjacent to
     the field. [phone]. [9/95]
Sky Bryce (W92):  The airport is privately owned, serving the
     Bryce Resort, located near the town of Bayse, Virginia. The
     airport is in a small valley just east of the western most
     ridge of the Shenandoah Valley. The field is a little
     difficult to find the first time you fly there, especially
     when approaching from the west. The runway is at the base of
     the ski slopes on the western side of the ridge, below the
     resort, oriented along the valley beside a small river. The
     approach is rather steep and tight to the sides of the
     valley. The airport is unlighted so it is restricted to
     daylight operations only. Bryce Resort. Walking distance
     from the runway. Open year round. Golf, horseback riding,
     swimming, tennis, boating, windsurfing in summer and skiing
     in winter. Townhouse, Condo, and Chalet rentals available.
     Excellent weekend outing or lunch trip. Dinner trips are
     only possible in summer due to daylight ops restriction at

     Located in the resort main building, serving lunch and
     dinner year-round. The lunch menu consists of salads,
     sandwiches, burgers and pasta entrees in the $4 to $6 range.
     The dinner menu is Italian and American entrees at a
     moderate price ($8 to $14). Dinner reservations are strongly

     Lounge. The bar/lounge is in the resort building adjacent to
     Lucio's. Serving appetizers, soups, sandwiches, and burgers
     in a very casual lounge atmosphere. Prices are very
     reasonable. Both Lucio's and the Copper Kettle look out onto

     miles away from the airport. Free pickup available with

Tangier Island (TGI):  Old Virginia town with a history dating
     back to 1607 and Captain John Smith. The island played a key
     role for the British in the War of 1812 for the assault on
     Ft. McHenry. About 90% of the inhabitants make their living
     from the surrounding waters. Many of the residents are of
     English (Cornish) extraction and still speak with the old
     English brogue or accent. The population generally enjoys a
     lifestyle free from the fast paced struggle most mainlanders
     endure and handle their affairs in a manner for the common
     good.
           Nice day trip. Access only by ferry or airplane.
     Nominal landing fee. Island tours by golf carts are
     available for $2.50/person with a guide, but the island is
     easily walkable. For the more adventurous bicycles can be
     rented for about $5.00/day.
          Most island establishments observe a seasonal schedule
     with the tourist season starting in mid-May and running
     through mid-October. The main street is lined with gift
     shops, restaurants, and local points as a whole without
     outside interference. Few cars are on the island. Many
     locals leave cars at Crisfield, Md. and keep golf carts or
     two wheeled transportation on the island. of interest.
     Tangier Island makes a very nice day trip or overnighter.

     the north-south road on the west side of the island, open

          Captain Davy Crockett's Tours. Offering bay cruises and
     island excursions aboard a 24 ft. Wellcraft cabin cruiser
     "SEA STAR" for $75.00 (up to 4 people and $10 for each extra
     person). Also available for fishing charters at

     excursions and fishing charters aboard a 42 ft. Chesapeake

     lunch and dinner featuring sandwiches, pizza, and a variety
     of fresh seafood caught near or around the island. Off

     and Nancy Crockett (very common local surname).  Waterfront
     Restaurant. Located on the wharf behind the main street.
     Popular eatery with view of the inlet and wharf. Lorraine's
     Sandwich Shop. Just off the main street at the point where
     the airport road meets the main street. Specializing in
     subs, pizza, and seafood sandwiches. [10/95]

Tappahannock Municipal (W79):  Lowery's Seafood Restaurant.

Warrenton-Fauquier Co. (W66):  Not much on the field but this is
     the nearest field to Bealton's Flying Circus. Great airshows
     every weekend all summer, including a lot of biplane action.
     If you get to Warrenton early, before the show at Flying
     Circus Airpark, they will pick you up and return you to
     Warrenton after the show. The FBO at Warrenton can supply
     the phone number when you arrive. [4/94]
Williamsburg-Jamestown (JGG):  Charly's Restaurant. In terminal
     building. Sandwiches of all kinds on fresh baked bread.
     Prime rib sandwich special has been highly recommended.
     Inside and outside seating with view of runways. Open for

     229-9256.  Colonial Williamsburg. The ultimate tourist
     village is a 3 mile ride from the airport. Colonial Cab
